New Pixel Art WhatTheAI Interior and Exterior with Enhanced Movement and Base Camp Entry

Adam RobertsAdam Roberts

Explore the updated WhatTheAI site with a new pixel art interior and exterior, faster movement by holding Shift, and an enterable Base Camp at spawn with improved map and camp features.

Highlights

  • WhatTheAI site now features a true pixel art exterior and interior with detailed, era-appropriate designs and improved visual clarity.
  • Holding Shift doubles your movement speed on foot and while paddling the canoe, making exploration faster.
  • The SomeShovels Base Camp is now enterable at spawn, serving as an expedition HQ with interactive furniture and NPCs.
  • The camp entrance and stele monument have been repositioned and visually enhanced for better accessibility and immersion.
  • Various map and interior improvements include walkability enhancements, consistent panel typography, and a dynamic lake monster that surfaces at different spots each cycle.

Details

The WhatTheAI interior was rebuilt using PixelLab's max canvas size and upscaled to a clean tile grid, ensuring pixel-perfect alignment and improved detail such as warm banded shading and a dominant flywheel in the press hall. The exterior was regenerated as a flat front elevation with a clear "WHAT THE AI" sign using pixel fonts for legibility.

Movement improvements apply to both the production and /v2 builds, allowing players to hold Shift to move twice as fast on foot or in the canoe, addressing feedback about slow map traversal.

The Base Camp introduces a large tent with a detailed interior including a map table, archive shelves, NPCs like the Quartermaster and Cartographer, and lore objects. The camp's doorway is now a wide, unmissable entrance with warm lamplight, and the stele monument has been replaced with a gold-topped Shovel Obelisk placed on dry ground near the tent.

Additional map features include a lake monster that surfaces deterministically in different lake locations every 26 seconds, and a one-time celebration panel triggered when all lore objects are found. Panel typography across the site has been increased for better readability.

These updates collectively enhance visual fidelity, navigation speed, and immersion in the SomeShovels world.
